Dear Families: A New Mom Needs Nurturing Too
As a new mom, I wasn’t prepared for how much I would need support—not just physically, but emotionally. In Indian households, we’re so focused on the baby (and rightly so), but somewhere, the mother disappears.
But the truth is, a healthy, supported mom = a happier baby.
Postpartum Recovery: It’s Not Just About the Body
Yes, healing stitches, sleep deprivation, and breastfeeding struggles are real. But what caught me off guard was:
-
Sudden mood swings
-
Overwhelming guilt
-
Feeling emotionally “numb”
-
Doubting my own instincts constantly
These aren't just hormones. They’re signs we need to be seen and heard.
Mental Health is Health
1 in 5 Indian mothers silently experiences postpartum depression or anxiety—but rarely talks about it. Let’s change that.
Family Can Make a Difference
What helped me the most?
-
My husband sharing night duties, without waiting to be asked
-
My mom asking, "How are you feeling?"—not just "How's the baby?"
-
My in-laws letting me rest, cook warm meals, and not expecting guests all the time
-
Words like “You’re doing amazing” on bad days
These small gestures gave me space to heal—not just physically, but emotionally.
Motherhood is not a solo act. It’s a collective, sacred transition. When families show up for the mother, we raise not just happier children, but stronger homes.
